Colin, Amee & JJ { Operation Love ReUnited }...

I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful family from Fort Drum for Operation Love Reunited recently. Amee contacted me to schedule her session before her husband Colin deployed to Afghanistan. We met at Freedom of Expresso coffee shop in Franklin Square for our session.

Being February in Central New York it was a little bit cold but we made it work. They braved the cold and walking through some deep snow in order to capture some family memories before he deployed.

I am truly honored to be a volunteer photographer and the Regional Coordinator for Operation Love ReUnited. There is no greater feeling than being able to give back to these incredible military families that sacrifice so much for all of us. Thank you!!!

Casey & Chad {they did}...

Casey and Chad got married on February 12, 2011 at the Craftsman Inn. They had an intimate ceremony with family and close friends. I do believe this was the largest wedding party I have ever photographed. A total of 11 bridesmaids and 11 groomsman. Everything was just perfect and the bride was stunning!

A reception at the Craftsman followed after the ceremony where a delicious three course dinner was served very efficiently by the staff. All of the 100 or so guests were seated at round tables with floating candles and fresh flowers (and beta fish). The accent colors were champagne and blue which was a refreshing combination. The bride is a wedding planner and owns Miss Priss Wedding Planning. She did a fabulous job with her own wedding.

DJ service by Lake Effect DJ & Karaoke kept the dance floor hopping after dinner. Mike did an awesome job and was great about keeping us all on schedule throughout the evening (alright so we ran behind a little bit but that's typical for weddings).

A big "Thank You" to my second shooter Michael with MJH Photography for assisting me with this wedding.

Syracuse Woman Magazine

Super exciting news to share with all of my followers! I am thrilled to announce I will be shooting for the new Syracuse Woman Magazine here in Central New York begining with the March/April edition. I can't wait to get started and I look forward to meeting some powerful, inspirational women here in Syracuse!

Syracuse Woman Magazine is the only upscale magazine targeted specifically for Syracuse's professional woman. Modeled after the highly successful Rochester Woman Magazine, SWM will contain the same high quality content and design that Rochester Woman have come to love. The 64 page, glossy, full color publication will be distributed bi-monthly to readers in the Greater Syracuse Area.

Their mission is simple: to inform, inspire and entertain.

A really fun test shoot for Kiss N Makeup Minerals here in Central New York. Owner Cara Keith Higby brought her line of makeup over to the studio so we could see the photographic capabilities of the mineral makeup. She did a makeover on our model Gabby and then we went into the studio and did our test shoot.

I was pleasantly surprised by how nice this makeup photographs, I love the natural glow and radiance it gives to the models skin. And it looks very natural too.

CNY Portrait Project

An amazing experience! Photographers, makeup artists, vendors from all across Central New York came together in Utica on November 21st for the CNY Portrait Project. The event was organized by Christy and Charles Thompson.

Underpriveleged families were provided with family portraiture by local photographers, makeup and hairstyling, food, toys for the kids and even a visit from Santa. The best part is everything was donated and all of the people involved with this project were volunteers. What a great feeling and a wonderful way to give back to others. I was so proud to be a part of this event and am looking forward to next year already.

Reena & Brett { they did }

Reena and Brett got married! Oh yes they did. A beautiful fall wedding in Chittenango, NY on October 23, 2010. Doesn't she look stunning? And the weather was absolutely perfect!

I've known Reena & Brett for a couple years now and have photographed them several times, both alone and as a couple. It really makes a difference when you have a connection with your couples. They are more comfortable, relaxed and themselves, which results in natural looking images.

Intimate church wedding (not too long), formals at Franklin Square and a warm reception at the Opus Lounge in Syracuse. It really was the perfect day. Reena was glowing all day and night! She's a skin care specialist and owner of Get Bella located in Liverpool, NY.

Congrats Reena & Brett! You two are an amazing couple and I can see the love and respect you have for each other.

A big "thank you" to my second shooter Kristi Baumgarten. She stepped out of her comfort zone for this event and is an amazing newborn/childrens photographer.

Abandoned Warehouse....

This shoot was AMAZING! We found an old, abandoned warehouse near Evans Mills NY (thank you Michael) and scheduled a huge model shoot with my East Coast Artists group. I think there were around twenty of us shooting at this location, carrying our portable flashes around, exploring every nook and cranny in this three story warehouse! Thankfully law enforcement did NOT show up because my husband told me before I left that he would not be bailing me out of jail!

We will be going back again in the spring, probably several times as a group and individually as well. There is still so much I need to explore at this location but not during the winter months. Our poor models were freezing!

Gosh, you are expensive! Can I get a CD with that?

Most of my clients value the professional, custom photography that I provide… others are just looking for a bargain.

“$45 for a 4x6? I can get it printed at XXXXX for only $.19!”

And this post is primarily education for those of you who have thought that very same thing.In essence… yes you COULD get a 4x6 print at the local store printed for cheap, but ONLY if you had the digital image (which must be purchased from me), because it is illegal to have something printed that you have swiped off of Facebook or your online gallery. So let’s say you bought the digital image ($100 each or collections starting at $800). You have an image that has been prepared to be printed at my lab.

“What does this mean?”

If it is red on my monitor, it will print red, NOT some weird shade of pink or orange. Red will be red. Blue will be blue. You get the picture (pun fully intended). If you take it to Big Box Store A and have it printed it may have a green tone…Store B may be more red… Store C may be WAY off. The thing is, printers vary, quality varies, just as price varies. You could get a Canvas printed at some off the wall online printer for cheap… will it be the same quality as the canvases I sell… doubtful. Will it be good enough to hang on your wall, maybe.

Let’s break this down for all you number people: Example of Cake Smash session.

I do cake smash sessions complimentary, as a service and fun session for my clients. A lot of work goes into these sessions.

• 30 minutes of communication/scheduling between Koppi Write & client
• 30 minutes to go get cake (or make cake) $10 cost to me
• 15 minutes travel to studio• 15 minutes of set up time before you arrive at the studio
• 30 minute session (shooting time)
• 30 minute clean up (here at the studio, all you have to clean is kiddo)
• 15 take down set time
• 2 hours image processing (uploading to computer, editing, backing up etc)
• 1 hour uploading to online gallery, posting sneak peeks etc. (2 if you are proofing in person)
• 1 hour client communication about ordering
• 30 minutes processing order
• 15 minutes checking order/preparing for shipping or pickup
• 15 minutes taking to be shipped
• * Add another 30 minutes of travel & 15 minutes at studio if you pick up order

Grand Total of time for ONE 30 minute session: 7 hrs 15 minutes (on average).

Remember… the cake smash session is complimentary. I do not know many people that will work 7 hours for free… would you? I do it because I LOVE my job, my clients and my ART.For longer sessions or weddings we would obviously add time in to the session and image processing, but I think you guys get the idea.

“Ok, now that I know this…what does it have to do with your pricing?”

Consider the costs. If you purchase your FAVORITE digital image for $100 from me. That 4x6 print you wanted just cost you $100.19. You can print a gazillion prints from that one image, I am being compensated once. You want a specialty item (canvas, standout etc) only and found some off-the-wall lab to print it for $80. Good for you, but now the price of that product is $180 because you have to buy the image to use. Isn’t it worth it to pay a little extra to get the quality product from me?

I LOVE photography, it is my passion. I work hard to learn new techniques, lighting, posing. I am always looking for a way to hone my skills. But it is business. MY business. It is livelihood for my family, food on our table, and clothes on our backs. That is what photography is to me. The math is easy. Working 7 hours for free will not provide the things needed for my family. Selling $5 4x6 prints or giving you a CD of all your images won’t either!

So… what are you getting for your $45 4x6 print (5x7s & 8x10s are priced the same)? You are getting professional quality products, services and art. You are getting me. My heart, my soul and my passion. You are getting your precious memories preserved by a professional who has everything to lose if you don’t LOVE (and purchase) your images.

"Portraits in the Park" { 2010 }

A few previews from my second annual fall "Portraits in the Park" promotion. I choose Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool again for this years settings. It's such a beautiful location! I must say though I was a little disappointed with the colors this year. I'll stick to mid-October for next years sessions. And I was really bummed that the playground was closed and under construction!

But we made the best of it and had some beautiful autumn weather and seven gorgeous families! Check them out below!

Apple Orchard shoot with the East Coast Artists

A fall fashion shoot on location with my East Coast Artists group at Apple Grove Farm out in Mexico, NY! We had such an amazing time shooting here despite a little bit of rain and drizzle and the cold temperatures. The models were such troopers braving the cold and rain for this shoot. Thank you all ladies! You were FAB!

The location was so PERFECT! Apple trees, lots of tractors, a barn, crates and other cool stuff. It was just an incredible shoot!

And after the shoot I think we all headed to the gift shop and bakery to pick up some goodies. I bought a homemade apple pie! Yummy!

Evan { 2011 Senior }

Had a great session with 2011 Senior Evan last week at his home in Jamesville. Evans' father Sean contacted me to schedule his sons session which I thought was so sweet. I am usually contacted by mom so I was impressed that dad was handling booking the photographer for his son. Go dad!

So I traveled out to Jamesville and met with Evan and Sean. What a couple of great guys! I felt immediately comfortable with them and felt like I had known them for years. They were very friendly and our session was very relaxed.

When I found out Evan played tennis I knew I wanted to incorporate a few tennis shots into our session. Check them out below.

Elijah / Syracuse Newborn Photographer

Baby Elijah / 16 days old

Had a wonderful and exhausting session with little Elijah this week. He really wasn't in the mood to have his pictures taken and pretty much just wanted his binky the whole time. We tried running the vacuum cleaner and a few other tricks but he only slept a total of about ten minutes.

Mom and I are going to try another session in a couple weeks. I did get a few images that I love though! And I got to play with the little guy so it was worth it!

CNY Portrait Project

I'm very excited to announce I will be volunteering my services at the CNY Portrait Project this year.

The goal of the Portrait Project is to provide makeup, hair styling and printed portraits to those in need in the Central New York area in time for the holidays. There will also be food and beverages donated by local area restaurants and Santa will be handing out gifts to the children. Everything at this event has been donated. What a great way to give back to the community and provide families with some cherished family portraits.

The CNY Portrait Project will be held on Sunday, November 21st at Leaf, Loaf & Ladle at RCIL, located at 1607 Genesee St. in Utica, NY.

Style Armory Square Fashion Show

I had the pleasure of attending and photographing the Style Armory Square Fashion Show at the historic Landmark Theater in Syracuse. It was an awesome show hosted by Amy Robbins from 93Q and sponsored by Gray Goose Vodka, Greatbrewers.com and Inspired Designs by Lisa.

The show featured a variety of fashions from boutiques located in Armory Square and showcased the 2011 Spring Collection from designer Lisa Marie Butler of Inspired Designs by Lisa.

2011 Senior Session with Mexico senior Felicia! This was a little different for me as Felicia choose the location for her session. She new exactly what she wanted! She wanted her Senior Portraits taken at her school, Mexico High School! I mean why not that's where she's spent the last four years of her life and where so many memories have been made already. It was perfect for her portraits. We were even given permission to shoot inside the school and the grand staircase was just beautiful.

Women & Horses

An awesome mother/daughter shoot with Cindy and Casey out in Brewerton and their gorgeous horses! This shoot was so much fun and the horses were so well behaved and simply beautiful!

It was really hot and sunny during the shoot which made it more challenging. Thankfully I'm very happy with the images we captured and so are they! We are planning another shoot with the horses for the fall!

Casey is a wedding planner and owner of Miss Priss Wedding Planning and Cindy is the owner of Back on Track Again in Brewerton next to the speedway.

I was so inspired by this shoot that I am considering shooting "Women and Horses of Central New York" for a Fine Art coffee table book and possibly even an exhibit in 2011!

East Coast Artists....

Happy to say my new East Coast Artists group is a huge success! We already have nearly 200 FANS on our Facebook page! I'm so happy and have been getting nothing but positive feedback so far from members. All of the photographers, models, makeup artists and stylists are wonderful! Everyone works exceptionally well together and we are all willing to help each other.

We have all been shooting like crazy! I wanted this to be an active group! Lots of group model shoots at different locations all across Central New York.

My photo is on the cover of the July issue of Family Times magazine! Yes, I am excited and proud!

The photo was taken a couple years ago at a water park and is my youngest daughter Emma. She had so much fun as you can see from the photo! It took her a long time to build up the courage to go on this slide with the tube.

And believe it or not I haven't picked up any issues for myself yet! But I'm working on it!! And you can see more on their website here.

Megan { Oswego, NY }

Wow! Really all I can say is WOW everytime I shoot with Megan. She is just an amazing model and knows exactly how to work the camera! And she is also a makeup artist and photographer too! It doesn't get any better than that!

For this shoot we went to my favorite location in Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario. Big rocks, waves, water and soft diffused light!

Even though it started out very rainy and we had to keep running for the car, totally ruined an umbrella, had a dead car battery and got a little bit wet - we had a fabulous shoot. And the rain did eventually stop and we captured some great images.

Amy & Family ( Fathers Day Special )...

I had the pleasure of photographing this wonderful family at Oneida Shores in Brewerton as a Fathers Day gift for dad! I had fun walking around the beach and capturing the love of this family. They were so sweet and so real and so BEAUTIFUL. And they are the reason I love my job so much. Thank you!

A wonderful Mothers Day Portrait Special with Jennifer and her daughter Lauren in Oswego, NY. We started out at Breitbeck Park and then I followed Jennifer to a fabulous, somewhat hidden location. Rudy's on Lake Ontario in Oswego. Apparently this place is famous and I never knew it existed. I would have never found it without Jennifer, actually not sure if I could find my way back alone again. I'm a pretty bad driver!

I'll be going back to Rudy's very soon with a model or two. I love the big, flat rocks and have to try out the food next time I am there. And my youngest, Emma loves to paint rocks. We usually bring a few back every time I am in Oswego from near the lighthouse.

Turning Heads in Downtown Syracuse...

Had a fantastic shoot with the beautiful and talented Megan a few weeks ago ( so I'm a little behind on the blogging). Model, photographer and makeup artist extraordinaire! And at 6 feet tall, drop dead gorgeous she was stopping traffic downtown. Even women were approaching us on the streets.

We did a high fashion shoot in downtown Syracuse. I love the urban look and of course she had some great outfits. We walked around downtown to a few of my favorite places and shot along the way, changing clothes in the alley when needed.

Blair Family Portraits { Franklin Square }...

It had been a while since I shot with the Blair family - Vic, Jaime, Victor & Michael. The last time was the fall of 2009 at Onondaga Lake Park. And of course little Michael has grown and changed a lot in the last six months. And so has Victor. It's always fun working with this family and it was nice to see Victor had become comfortable with me and was more relaxed in front of the camera. I think he is used to having me around now, lol.

This time we went to my new favorite location, Franklin Square in Syracuse, New York. It is just beautiful there with a little bit of everything! Urban and country all in one, you just have to walk around and explore. Old historic brick buildings and sidewalks, cool bridges, a fountain, lots of tulips and beautiful flowering trees.

No, it's not a wedding! It's the day my beautiful sixteen year old daughter, Brianna got her braces off. She waited patiently for two long years and the day finally came. I thought this was worth some blog love today. They grow up so fast!

And I promised Dr. Raineri I would send him some pictures too. He's always so good to us. This is the second daughter to have braces and we have one more to go! Thankfully, we should have a few more years before Emma is ready for hers.

Reena & Brett are getting married in beautiful South Carolina on October 23rd, 2010.

What a beautiful couple and soooo in LOVE! You can tell just by looking at them and how they interact with one another. They are meant to be together. Brett even danced with Reena during our session (see below). Now that is true love!

The Williams Family...

The Williams family portrait session was so much fun. The shoot included 8 adults and 7 children. Yes, 15 people! We shot at Breitbeck Park in Oswego on a beautiful spring day, that felt a lot like summer. It was pretty hot and very windy by the shore of Lake Ontario.

We started out with some group portraits and of course I had to make them do something fun. So I had them all jump, more than once, lol. And they were really good at it. Ha ha! After that I just followed them around the park and playground as they played and enjoyed some family time together. I love capturing families in the documentary style. It's the way you see your family and kids everyday. Natural and real! No cheesy, unnatural portraits here.

My oldest daughter Kayla was with me for this Mothers Day special capturing all the crazy moments on video. I'm looking forward to seeing the final video montage from this wonderful family session. I know she captured some awesome moments as well.

Another military wife waiting for the safe return of her husband. Another precious child waiting for her daddy to hug and kiss her again. Another wonderful Operation Love ReUnited session. I'm so grateful for the sacrifices these families make each and every day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I met Lauren and 8 1/2 month old Kennedy at Thompson Park in Watertown, NY for our portrait session. We were blessed to have warm sunshine and a cool breeze at the park while we were shooting. And little Kennedy was such a trooper and so happy. Oh and mom picked out the most perfect outfit for her too. She must have known I love bright colors, lol.

We spent over an hour at Thompson Park playing on the playground, walking around and just enjoying the sunshine.

The Rhodes Family { Franklin Square }...

I had so much fun shooting this family on a beautiful spring day in Franklin Square. The location was just perfect. A little bit of urban architecture, tulip gardens, brick pathways, bridges, a fountain and gorgeous flowering trees. It doesn't get any better than this! I think Franklin Square may be my new favorite location now. As a matter of fact, I went back a few days later for another session and explored a little bit more. It is amazing to say the least!!!

The Rhodes family was such a joy to work with and their 2 year old little girl was a trooper. Even when I made her walk towards the camera at least three times for me. She got tired of that real fast.

It's moments like these that will be cherished forever! And the images will be passed down from generation to generation for all to enjoy. I just love my job and being able to capture and preserve these special memories for families.

Veronica & Aaron { they did }...

I was so honored to be a part of Veronica & Aarons beautiful wedding. They are such an amazing couple and you could just feel the love between them. Their wedding was perfect, except for the freezing cold weather and wind, brrr!

Veronica & Aaron were married at St. Mary's of the Assumption in Baldwinsville, NY. The church was so GORGEOUS with beautiful stained glass windows and amazing light. That's always a plus!

And Veronica was was stunning in her gown. All of the bridesmaids wore pale pink dresses and carried spring bouquets. The reception was held at Justin's Grill in East Syracuse. The food was delicious and the party was hopping. I believe a memorable time was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Thank you Veronica & Aaron for allowing me to share in your wedding day. I wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness. And I can't wait to start designing your custom wedding album.

Jennifer & Joey at the Park...

I had the pleasure of photographing Jennifer & Joey at Onondaga Lake Park a few days ago. Dad even joined us for a little bit. They booked one of my Mothers Day Specials and we had a great time capturing some new memories and even a few "Mommy Moments" for them.

I'm not one for the cheesy, boring, posed portraits so always prefer to shoot kids and families outdoors on location rather than in the studio. It just makes for real and natural images and thats what I want to capture. The kids can be themselves and just enjoy the experience.

And I'm pretty sure four year old Joey was one of the fastest kids I've ever shot, lol. Just when I would get the camera up to my eye, he would take off and move on to explore something else. Thankfully I'm pretty fast too!

My oldest daughter Kayla also joined us to capture the session on video and created a beautiful montage for the family. Click here to watch their video. Mom said she cried a little bit when she watched it and to be completely honest, I did too!

Another beautiful Operation Love Reunited family from Fort Drum! I have been so busy with these sessions the last few months. Word is really spreading around Central New York about this wonderful organization and the service we provide for these families.

We met at Onondaga Lake Park for our shoot and were fortunate to have gorgeous weather too. It's a really great place for documentary style portraiture and the playground is always a favorite for the kids.

I'm sure dad will love receiving an album full of pictures of his family while he is deployed. It's a little piece of home while he is away serving our country.

Operation Love Reunited - Jennifer

A few from a recent Operation Love Reunited session with a family from Fort Drum. This time I drove to their home on base. Having three young children it was much more convenient for me to go to them. And I don't mind driving as long as the weather cooperates. They were such a cute family and the kids were so friendly and welcoming.

Dad is leaving soon for another deployment and mom just found out she's pregnant with their fourth child!

Carrie & Jason { maternity }

Carrie and Jason drove all the way to my studio from Fort Drum for their maternity session. Carrie is 7 1/2 months pregnant with their first child, a baby boy! They have been staying at a hotel, living out of boxes while they wait for housing on base. Jason will be deployed for the third time later in the year. The baby is due in May so he will be home for the birth of his first son! We are going to schedule an Operation Love Reunited family session before he leaves.

We had a great time during our session and they had a few ideas they wanted to try. The "Rock and Roll" headphones on belly images is their idea. And I LOVED it!

It's important for me to give my clients a nice variety of images. I think we did 5-6 different sets in the studio and some outdoors as well. I absolutely adore natural light and capturing some of the environment and surroundings during my sessions when possible. And these two were up for just about anything!

Thanks guys! I hope you love the images as much as I do!

Julie & Aurora { Operation Love Reunited}...

Another Operation Love Reunited session from last week. I have been doing a lot of these sessions the past few weeks. It seems all of our Fort Drum boys are being deployed!

Julie and Aurora (3 months old) came to my studio for their session. Dad hasn't seen his daughter since she was born. And even though Aurora was a little fussy ( I think she misses her daddy ) we managed to capture some great moments for dad.

I'm getting ready to order the prints Julie choose for dads album. The album will be sent to him in Afghanistan. He'll have a little piece of home with him during his deployment.

Operation Love Reunited Session....

Another wonderful Operation Love Reunited session in the studio. Joshs' mom scheduled the session before he was to be deployed to Afghanistan. She wanted some portraits with her son, and his fiancee. It had been years since they had their pictures taken.

A few days after our session Missy & Josh got married!!! And he was deployed the following day. Congrats you two, wishing you a long and happy life together. Thank you Josh for serving our country!

K Glam Model Shoot { BLOG }...

On Saturday, January 17th I had the pleasure of attending a group model shoot hosted by Kelly of K Glam Photo Studio. She organized the event and provided the models, location and makeup artist. All I had to do was show up with my camera.

Every once in a while, when time permits I try to work group model shoots into my schedule. It's a great way to practice your craft, play with new lighting techniques and try out new poses. This was one of those times and I'm very pleased with the results.

I had never worked with any of these models previously. They were all FABULOUS! And they had some amazing clothes too!

Before I announce the winner of the Boudoir Portrait Contest, let me first say "Thank You" to all of the wonderful women who shared their stories. I had a really hard time choosing and I wish I could have given each one of you a Boudoir Portrait Session! You all deserve to win. But there were a couple stories that really pulled at my heart strings and brought tears to my eyes.

I think because I could relate to them personally as I have been there myself and was a single mother for many years, working two jobs at times, going to school and selling furniture to pay the rent and buy food for my kids. I can also relate to the lack of sleep (my oldest was colicky and never slept through the night) and not having enough time with your children. However, I think I'm a stronger, better person because of it all and I appreciate the little things in life and everything I have accomplished since then. No one said life would be easy right?

One Year Old Cake Smash { BLOG }...

Where does the time go? I've been photographing little Michael for a whole year now starting with when he was only a few days old. And now he is a Year Old already! It just doesn't seem possible.

Mom and Dad brought him to the studio for a "Cake Smash" session. So much fun and messy too! Of course we started with the traditional portraits first, before we let him dig into his Prince cake. And boy did he have fun with that cake.

Happy Birthday Michael. You are such a wonderful, well natured, happy little boy and growing up way too fast. I'm sure Mom and Dad agree.

I just loved this family: Frankie, Kasey, Julian & Willow! They were so sweet! And they drove all the way from Auburn to shoot with me. We had a great session in the studio and got some fun shots too. My sessions always go by way too fast. Willow had a great time playing on my stairs while I photographed mom and dad.

Their entire order was for black and white prints as well. I love black and white, there's just something so timeless about them.

I'm looking forward to a "special" portrait session with just mom in a couple months!

The beautiful "P" family! I actually did two Holiday Portrait sessions with this wonderful family, one in the studio and one at their home. Mom was a little stressed about getting good images of the kids. I know how she feels. Getting family portraits taken can be very stressful, especially for the mom. All the preparation of picking out the perfect outfits and then hoping everyone cooperates.

So this way she had two chances and she was much more relaxed. It took the little guy a good half hour to get comfortable with me in the studio. So we started with his little sister first. After a little while he was hamming it up in front of the camera.

And when I arrived at their home for the second part of our session, he was much more at ease because he remembered me from the studio. I just love my job and love working with children and families!

Just an example of what can be done nowadays with Digital Photography and some post processing and of course Photoshop! On the sample image below, I added the Vintage Blush Action from the CoffeeShop. Then I added a fun texture on top of that at a low opacity and erased it from their faces. For the final step, I added a vignette to darken the corners a bit.

I may have to order a canvas of this print for my studio.

What to Wear? { BLOG }...

One question I get asked a lot is what should we wear to our photoshoot? Well here's a well written guide by fellow photographer Brea of Cye Photography who has kindly given permission to use this article. It will be very useful for you if you have just booked a session and need help coming up with an outfit for you and your family.

Show me your personality! You are more than just khaki pants and a white dress shirt –show it! If red is your favorite color, wear red. Like stripes? Great! Bring them with you. Simple patterns and bold colors look great on in person AND in photos. Choosing a bold color that is similar to your eye color is an awesome choice too.

Add LAYERS and TEXTURE. Think scarves (light weight or winter weight), hats, jackets, blazers, ties, denim, knits and corduroy. Long sleeves under short sleeves, leggings under skirts/dresses. Fun shoes like tall boots or sassy heels. A variety of textures will give your photos some extra punch to go with your great smile.
Be a head turner. Wear the blazer that fits just right. Or that dress that makes you feel like a million bucks. It’s a fact; clothes that make you feel good make you LOOK good. If you have the option, why not wear something that makes you want to smile?

Avoid logos, bold patterns and character-wear. Leave Dora and Diego at home. Character-wear and logos may be precious in person but will leave you clueless in twenty years when you look back on your photos and try to figure out who that is on your child’s shoes. Keep it timeless and focused on your faces, not your clothes.
Along the same lines, pick clothing that fits nicely. It should be neither too tight nor too loose. The clothes should hang on the bodies well, without folding or creasing. And always dress for full-length shots, which means socks and shoes that also match and are in good shape. A lot of times barefoot is best, weather permitting.

Of Special Note:

Kids:

Think personality. Cheerful, fun prints, polka dots, stripes, camo; whatever showcases who they really are. Add some layers and texture (maybe even a tutu, pettiskirt or tie) and voila! Instant photographic art. Most kids aren’t comfortable in formal dress and occasionally it can show in their pictures. So, if you have your heart set on your little angel in a suit and tie or an elaborate party dress, make sure to bring a second outfit that is more casual and comfortable.

Families & Couples:

Coordinating but not matching. Don’t over-match! The whole group does not have to wear black t’s and denim. Why not shake it up a bit and show some of who each person is as an individual within the whole? Mom should be the belle of the ball in a dress/skirt or fashionable jeans and ideally, heels! Make sure everyone dresses at the same level of formality; either all dressy or all casual, in similar or complimentary color tones. Examples could be earth tones, jewel tones, sky blue and chocolate brown, etc. Or coordinate the family in red, black, white & gray. Mix and match colors/patterns/textures.

Maternity & Newborn:

Be who you are. For maternity, we suggest some simple basics: jeans with a real waist, tight tops that hug the belly, a beautiful dress or flowing skirt and a flattering, comfortable, yet attractive, bra/cropped top/sweater, possibly with a beautiful print. After all, most of this session will be all about the belly. For your precious newborn, au naturale, or just a diaper, is best. We want to capture those beautiful bellies, tiny toes and tooshies. If you have a special outfit be sure to have that ready to go as well.

Make me sensitive to the qualities and virtues of others, that I may draw out into the light the beautiful radiant belongings of their hearts.

Help me to be an artist, collecting the beauty of every soul, the glow of youth, the gentleness, the laughter or tears of each life that is precious in Thy sight. Deeper than a means of livelihood, give me the perspective to see my photographer's art as a service to others, making life richer and more memorable.

If this family looks familiar to you it's because I captured Tonys' Marine Homecoming a few weeks ago for the Operation Love Reunited organization. They booked me for a fall family session shortly thereafter.

We went to one of my favorite locations, Onondaga Lake Park. The weather was perfect, the leaves were golden and the family was a pleasure to work with. The kids, Irelyn & Evan are just so sweet and precious. This is a family with a whole lot of LOVE.

Introducing Ashleigh! This beautiful young woman has only been modeling for two weeks. Seriously. And she was just incredible to work with. Great with her posing and needed very little instruction. A photographers dream!

We spent over two hours shooting at Onondaga Lake Park and finding cool locations. She even climbed in a tree for some of the shoot, in her heels no less!

A fun, autumn family portrait session at Onondaga Lake Park. I love this family! They have been through so much together and it has made them stronger and closer. And they have more strength and courage than I could ever hope to have.

We had a great time at the park and the kids were so well behaved. I was so proud of Victor for sitting still for so long. I know it is hard for kids that age to do. He did finally get to play on the playground though.

This post contains no pictures. Just a story taken from one of the photography forums where I lurk. It was posted and shared by a fellow photographer.

This story brought me to tears as I read it and really made me think about what is really important. I am so grateful for my children, family and the chance to enjoy it all. It's a long story but well worth the reading.

"As a photographer, I have shot a lot of things from the weird to the wonderful and things that without the shots in hand, people just plain wouldn't believe you if you told them what you had photographed.

Today I did a shoot that I know I'll never forget.

The other day I was asked by a friend if I could do one of their friends a favour by shooting some family portraits for them. It was lined up for today and I met the subject family at my friends well groomed home. The shoot went very well and the 2 boys aged 5 and 7 could only be described as perfectly behaved. My friend said they were normally little tearaways but today he admitted they were nothing short of little angels.The family interacted well and I spent about 15 minutes in the garden shooting the family, parents and kids together and maybe a little longer inside.

My friend whom is a keen but extremely accomplished hobby shooter rolled out every bit of lighting gear he had ( which makes for a very well equipped studio!) but I spotted a bright but softly lit corner of the lounge room and shot a second set of portraits there which everyone seemed to love the natural look of. Upon seeing them on the back of the camera, the mother confided that she much preferred that type of natural look and actually hated the type with backdrops. Subsequently not a light was plugged in nor a backdrop unrolled.

There were few pictures that weren't excellent and it was a very easy shoot even though I normally wouldn't do this type of work in a pink fit. AS far as i'm concerned, if the kids are co-operative and smile just right, your a hero shooter. If they decide they want to have a tantrum, your sunk. Luckily, thanks to the kids, today in the eyes of the parents, I was a hero.

After showing the mother the results on the computer she seemed very pleased and my friend and I did a little retouching of the shots and then printed out some A4'son his high end printer. Even I was impressed with what we came up with.After showing the mother the prints, she seemed very positive and genuinely happy with the results, even the single portraits of her.

I got talking with her Husband and my friend and noticed she had disappeared from view for some time. A little later outside while minding the BBQ , I had a chat to the mother who thanked me profusely for doing the shots for her and with a visible tear in her eye, said that this was something thing she had been meaning to get done for a long time and could now cross it off her list. She also confided that she had been in the bathroom for 20 min crying because she liked the pics and they meant so much.

The significance of the pictures is that she has cancer and is not expected, although is hoping for the sake of her boys, to last till Christmas.

She had planned on getting pics done for quite some time but hasn't been up to it and by some miracle, after being given last rights less than a week ago, is up and walking round and you wouldn't even know to look at her she was at all sick.

The boys looked great the way they were dressed, they wore the clothes she bought them to wear to her funeral. The next time they put them on, she will be gone and they will be going somewhere that no kid their age and well beyond should ever have to go to.

She has written out their significant age birthday cards with money enclosed in their 18th card to go buy their first drink and remember their Mum. She has cards for them for many Christmas's to come as well and made Videos and written many letters to be given to them at certain times in the future. Having lost my mother at a similar age to these kids, I also know what they are going to face not just now, but for many years to come.

The strength of this woman and her husband in the face of what they have already, and have yet to go through, was indescribable. Mum and Dad were very up front about the situation and there was no pretense or withholding discussion about the imminent. At dinner, she complimented my friend on the Potato he cooked her and said if it turned out to be her last one, she had really enjoyed it.

The cruelty and complete unfairness of this situation is beyond even my verbose ability to describe and is one of those things that no matter how bad you think things are, you are reminded of how much worse they are for others. I'm not a faithful man but things like this are a reminder of the need to stop and give sincere thanks for how well off you really are just to be walking upright and expect to be for the foreseeable future. For this woman, this time next next week is a very uncertain proposition.

The older I get, the softer I become but I don't mind admitting when that woman was saying good bye to go home and thanked me for the pictures and told me that was the last thing she wanted to get done and now everything was in order and she could go with no worries knowing that everything was now done, I had to have a few not so short moments in another room while I got it together again.

I can't imagine the pain this woman is going through from things other than caused by her physical sickness or how the husband hasn't just curled up in a ball and lost his mind out of sheer despair. He tries to be positive and reassuring about things they can still look forward to and enjoy with each other but she is equally realistic and honest about the fact she could be gone in a matter of hours should one of her many complications take a turn for the worst.

I have been at this Photo caper a long time now but today was one of the easiest, hardest, most significant, saddest, meaningful and probably appreciated jobs I have shot so far. It's also one of the most unjust, cruelest and just plain wrong situations I have ever seen first hand and one I'll never forget.

Photography has taken me some amazing places but today it took me to one of the saddest I have ever seen as well. I know though personal experience the significance of the last Photos taken of a loved one hold, I just hope what I did today will pay proper homage and respect to this woman for all the years to come they will be one of the main memory's for her sons and a significant one for her husband."

Michele & Kosly got married! Woo hoo, it's about time. And it was a beautiful wedding in Buffalo. Everything went as planned, the bride was glowing, the groom played his saxophone, some of the family sang and the church was amazing. It was just PERFECT!

OpLove Homecoming { BLOG }...

I was so honored to be able to capture this emotional Marine Homecoming celebration as part of the Operation Love Reunited organization. It is an experience I will never forget and one of my most rewarding sessions. Over a hundred marines returned to Central New York. It was a huge celebration with food, music and tears.

Tony has been deployed and away from his family for nearly a year! He had never met his new little boy Evan and got to hold him for the first time when he arrived. I cannot even imagine what that is like for him and his wife and children.

Thank you for your courage, sacrifice, dedication and for keeping us all safe! We are so proud of you all.

The "S" family Life Unscripted photo session at Onondaga Lake Park in Syracuse. Dad is active military at Fort Drum and was home on a short leave. Luckily he was home to witness the birth of his new son, Wyatt.

I originally met this wonderful family through Operation Love Reunited. I photographed mom and Jesse a few months back and we surprised dad with a photo album. He loved it.
